Remembrances Antiques & Collectibles - Maxine Spence

Maxine Spence was born and raised in St. Mary's County.  Maxine worked for many years at the Patuxent River Naval Base as a budget analyst.  After leaving the naval base position, Maxine now provides bookkeeping services for her husband's general contracting business.  She also volunteers at the St. Mary's County Health Department and is on the foundation board for the St. Mary's County Nursing Home.

Maxine's love for antiques began when they remodeled their first house in 1966 - a 1905 Victorian - and continues on today after the remodeling of their current residence, another 1905 Victorian home.  In 1977, Maxine had the opportunity to take over an established antique business in Hughesville at the old Lyons Department Store location.  The shop retains the old wood floor and tin ceilings original to the 1920s building.  Maxine and her husband, Harry, travel extensively throughout the eastern section of the U.S. searching for antiques.  They love the thrill of finding that great buy, restoring, researching the history of the items, and its eventual selling.

The shop has seven antique dealers choosing their own selections of antiques, which provides a greater variety of antique items for sale.  More than most antique shops, they carry a very nice line of antique furniture that is clean and ready to be placed in your home.  There are many small items such as pottery, old books, depression glass, heisey, toys, clocks, kitchen ware, yellow ware, platters and linens.  The dealers buy, as well as, sell antiques.  Our staff is friendly and most helpful in assisting customers with questions.

The antique shop hosts many activities during the year.  Our Holiday Open House in November is always a great event, as well as, our Customer Appreciation Days in July.  Our doors were open in December for "A Village Christmas" which recreated the 1950s lighting of the Christmas tree on the side lot, hot drinks and cookies, and the arrival of Santa on the fire truck (snow fell just as Santa arrived!)  Watch for an upcoming tea!

Located at 8394 Old Leonardtown Road on the corner of Route 5 and Route 231, Hughesville, MD, the shop is open Thursdays - Sundays.  Phone:  301-274-5787

We are looking forward to the growth of Hughesville and want to continue to be a part of the expansion and activities.
